NFL Best and Worst Rankings: Week 13

For those into NFL football betting, Sunday might have been frustrating for those who thought the rolling New York Jets would have an easy time of it with the Denver Broncos, only to lose by 17 at home.

Meanwhile, if you’re still betting on the Detroit Lions to win (guilty as charged…), you’re either bold (I wish!) or pushing insane (I think that’s more like it…). How many ways can you say ‘terrible?’

1. New York Giants (11-1): Not having drama magnet Plaxico Burress in the lineup for the rest of the season hurts Burress a lot more than it will the Giants.

2. Tennessee Titans (11-1): How do you rebound from your first loss? By completely destroying the league’s worst team, that’s how.

3. Indianapolis Colts (8-4): Winning without an offensive touchdown? It might have helped that they were playing against the offensively-challenged Browns, but Indy’s defense came up huge on Sunday to offset a subpar day from the offense.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3): Just when Matt Cassel was getting on a roll, he ran into the Steel Curtain. Tony Romo best watch his back, front, and sides on Sunday.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-3): The Bucs could all but win (or lose) the NFC South in the next two weeks, as they go on the road to 9-3 Carolina and 8-4 Atlanta. If their defense can have repeat performances from the home games against the Panthers (27-3) and Falcons (24-9), their chances of putting the division away are pretty good.

6. Dallas Cowboys (8-4): After feasting on two bad teams, Tony Romo and the Cowboys get one of their toughest tests of the season when they go to the Steel City.

7. Carolina Panthers (9-3): The Panthers had a tough one at Green Bay on Sunday, but thanks to DeAngelo Williams and his four touchdowns, they got a road win that keeps them neck and neck with the Buccaneers and ahead of the Falcons in the NFC South.

8. New York Jets (8-4): Just as they took a big step forward with their win at Tennessee, the Jets took a big one back by losing at home to the Broncos. Talk about a letdown.

9. Atlanta Falcons (8-4): I’m sure it was sweet for Michael Turner to run for 120 yards against his old team, but more importantly, the Falcons picked up a big road win in San Diego that keeps them in the thick of things in the NFC South and NFC. They have to keep winning though, and that makes Sunday’s game at New Orleans a very important one.

10. Baltimore Ravens (8-4): Quietly, the Ravens are staying on the Steelers’ heels in the NFC North.

And now, for the bottom 10…

23. San Francisco 49ers (4-8): Buffalo may not be the same team that they were earlier in the season, but the 49ers’ win in Buffalo was a good one nonetheless.

24. Cleveland Browns (4-8): They did lose, but the Browns held Indianapolis without an offensive touchdown, and without Robert Mathis’ scoop ‘n score, would’ve had the upset win. Unfortunately, Derek Anderson now joins Brady Quinn on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.

25. San Diego Chargers (4-8): Their hopes of winning the AFC West may have flown out of the window on Sunday, when they lost at home to the Falcons and the Broncos won at the Meadowlands.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-8): I don’t think there were many people who had the Jaguars pegged to be in last in the AFC South at this point, but that’s the case after their loss at Houston on Monday night.

27. Oakland Raiders (3-9): Had they beat the Chiefs at home, they’d have been tied for second in the AFC West with San Diego. Not sure how impressive that is, especially if you’re the Chargers.

28. Kansas City Chiefs (2-10): The Chiefs don’t want to follow the script, do they? They’re not going to get the #1 pick by winning, but they did just that on Sunday at Oakland.

29. Seattle Seahawks (2-10): It’s almost over, Mike. Just four more games to go.

30. Cincinnati Bengals (1-10-1): That’s more like it, Bengals.

31. St. Louis Rams (2-10): It’d have been a big win for the Rams had they knocked off the Dolphins, but they fell short.

32. Detroit Lions (0-12): There’s not a lot to say about this team that hasn’t been said already.

I’m not sure if they’re going to have an over/under on the amount of penalties Flozell Adams might draw against the Steelers’ tenacious defense on Sunday, but they do have a wealth of wagering options, so head on over there.

Can the Buffalo Bills right the ship and stay in the playoff hunt?

Through the first several weeks of the season, the Buffalo Bills appeared to be well on their way to emerging as a contender in the AFC.

The Bills started 5-1 and capitalized on early stumbles by New England and the New York Jets to get an early cushion in the AFC East. After an impressive home win against San Diego in Week 7, the Bills were in position to fully seize control of the AFC East, with all three of their division foes ahead.

However, in the last four games, everything that went right for the Bills in their 5-1 start has gone wrong, and with the Jets on a roll, Miami proving that they’re not your average rebuilding team, and the Patriots still staying above water, the Bills are now at the bottom of the AFC East at 5-5 after their 29-27 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Monday night.

The Bills could have easily won in three of those four games, but could have and did are two different things. In Week 8, they couldn’t hold a 16-7 third-quarter lead in a 25-16 loss at Miami. The next week, they tripped themselves up in a 26-17 loss to the Jets. And in Monday night’s loss to the Browns, they couldn’t stop Cleveland when they needed to, and after putting themselves in position for a win, couldn’t get a little Fisk-like luck on Rian Lindell’s field goal in the final minute.

The Bills have a great mix of young talent on both sides of the ball, and they should soon be a regular challenger for the postseason.

But if they want to rescue this season’s postseason hopes before they go down the drain, the offense needs to really bust out of its shell and make full use of its talent. It’s tough to pin your hopes on an offense centered around two second-year players in Trent Edwards and Marshawn Lynch, but it’s safe to say we haven’t seen the best of the Bills’ offense yet, by any means. Just as much, the defense needs to be able to do enough to keep leads.

This team has a ton of potential, and it’s not too late to right the ship and make a run at the AFC East title or a wild-card berth. But, they can ill-afford to be their own worst enemy from here on out, starting on Sunday on the road against a pesky Kansas City team.

Monday NFL Minute: Titans win (again), Lions lose (again), and plenty more

There’s still one more game to be played in Week 11 of the NFL season, but Week 11’s first 15 games have yielded plenty of observations, a few surprises, and a few things staying according to form.

The Titans keep winning, the Lions keep losing, and there was neither in Cincinnati yesterday.

Cleveland and Buffalo get the Monday night spotlight tonight, and I‘ll have something in relation to that tomorrow. Here’s a quick run-through of what has transpired so far in Week 11.

New York Jets 34, New England 31: See here.

Tennessee 24, Jacksonville 14: The Titans can already beat teams with defense and the running game, but if Kerry Collins (13-23, 230 yards, 3 TD, INT) is doing more than just being efficient, the Titans might be almost unstoppable.

Tampa Bay 19, Minnesota 13: If you hold Adrian Peterson below 100 total yards and no touchdowns, your chances of winning are more than fair. His total yesterday? 82 (85 rushing on 19 carries, -3 receiving on one catch, no TD).

New York Giants 30, Baltimore 10: 200 rushing yards against the Ravens? In case you didn’t know already, the Giants are pretty good.

Miami 17, Oakland 15: Another close one against a bad team at home, but the Dolphins pulled it out yet again. If they beat New England on Sunday, the road to the playoffs is pretty clear for Miami. Four of their last five games are on the road, but three come against St. Louis, Kansas City, and San Francisco (their lone home game after next Sunday).

New Orleans 30, Kansas City 20: The Chiefs are still terrible, but Tyler Thigpen (235 yards, 2 TD, INT) is emerging as a nice bright spot. But does he stand a chance if the Chiefs go QB shopping in the 2009 NFL Draft?

Indianapolis 33, Houston 27: The defense might still be a question mark at times, but Peyton Manning (814 yards, 7 TD, 0 INT in Nov.) and the offense are kicking it into high gear just in time.

Green Bay 37, Chicago 3: Second-best team in the NFC? Hard to say that when a team’s 5-5, but the Packers are certainly my pick to win the NFC North if they play this well more often.

Cincinnati 13, Philadelphia 13: There are certain distinctions that you never want to be associated with. Being involved in an ugly tie is one of them. You say great defensive battle, I say sight for sore eyes.

Carolina 31, Detroit 22: Detroit held Jake Delhomme to 98 yards passing, but unfortunately, they forgot to account for Jonathan Stewart (130 yards, TD) and DeAngelo Williams (120 yards, 2 TD). On another note, what does Drew Stanton have to do to get his chance?

Denver 24, Atlanta 20: First home loss of the season for the Falcons, thanks in no small part to Denver doing a good job of limiting Michael Turner, who had two touchdowns but averaged barely three yards a carry (25 carries, 81 yards).

Arizona 26, Seattle 20: The Cardinals might need a monster day from the ground game sooner or later, but who cares about running the ball when you’ve got Kurt Warner slinging it to Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald?

San Francisco 35, St. Louis 16: Now that he’s got the first win out of the way, it’s time to string together a few more for Mike Singletary. That won’t be easy though, with the Cowboys, Bills, Jets, and Dolphins on the slate for the next four weeks.

Pittsburgh 11, San Diego 10: Is San Diego the best 4-6 team you’ll ever see? Maybe so, but they best start winning if they don’t want to be sitting home in January.

Dallas 14, Washington 10: It’ll take another week or two for Tony Romo to really get his groove back, but having a competent quarterback makes a world of difference for the Cowboys.

Should the NFL do away with ties?

By now, you’ve likely either heard or read about Donovan McNabb’s lack of knowledge about the NFL’s tie rules.

I imagine that sometime during this week, Donovan might make a post on his Yardbarker blog making light of the situation, as he should. We’ll continue to laugh and talk about it even after he’s put it out of his mind, it’ll end up on a funnies and follies reel or twenty thousand, and it might even end up making it on a Coors Light commercial. Maybe he was more focused on having completed less than 50% of his passes and getting picked off three times than on worrying about the tie rule, but thanks either way, Donovan.

But on a serious note, his comments and the game itself make me, if not anyone else, wonder about whether the NFL should just scrap the tie rule.

If you’re a Bengals or Eagles fan, or anyone who had to watch Sunday’s game in Cincinnati, your answer might be a resounding yes. No one likes to see a punt-filled overtime, so eliminating the punts from the equation could make things a little more entertaining…and end quicker.

Personally, I prefer way overtime is played out in the college game, and I think the NFL should adopt some form of those overtime rules in the near future.

Both teams get at least one possession (hooray for fairness!), and having to go for two after touchdowns starting with the third overtime means that a game could end a lot quicker than it might if teams were still allowed to kick extra points.

Of course, the NFL could make some tweaks to those rules. They might think it’s a little too easy to score if the teams start at the 25 in each overtime, so there could be some changes in that area. Maybe start from the 50 in the first overtime, move it to the 40 for the second overtime, and then to the 30 for the third overtime and beyond? Just a thought.

The current tie rule that applies to playoff games could remain, but I’d like to hope that, if the NFL did amend its overtime rules for regular-season games, that they would be smart enough to not amend it to that one.

Jets win in New England, but Cassel impresses in defeat

There are a couple major things that can be taken from the New York Jets’ thrilling 34-31 overtime win at New England last night.

The first for many is likely whether or not the Jets are now the team to beat in an AFC East that has been a lot more competitive than anyone would‘ve expected in the preseason.

It’s hard to argue against it right now, certainly. The Jets are 3-1 against their division foes, with all three of those victories coming on the road. Brett Favre is still excellent when he wants to be, and Thomas Jones is producing (104 yards, 3 TD vs. New England).

But are they a sure-fire Super Bowl contender? They’re on the way to proving it, but their defense is still a little hit-or-miss. Their real test will come next week at Tennessee, when the Fightin’ Favres could face a Titans team that will be 10-0 if they can win at Jacksonville on Sunday.

The other thing to take from last night, and what catches my eye more than the Jets’ win, is the maturation of Matt Cassel. Cassel’s had his struggles since stepping in for Tom Brady, but last night, Cassel had his best game by far.

If you hadn’t been paying attention to the name and number on the back of the jersey, you might have thought it was Brady out there rallying the Patriots last night, not Cassel. If it happens that you took a gamble on starting Cassel in your fantasy team this week, you came out looking roses, thanks to his night through the air (30 of 51, 400 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT). He also added 62 yards on the ground, which certainly doesn’t hurt.

More notable than the numbers is the way that Cassel rallied New England from a 24-6 second-quarter deficit, operating the two-minute drill to perfection at the end of each half to produce key touchdowns.

Late in the first half, the Jets were in control with their 18-point lead. But, Cassel led the Pats 68 yards and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jabar Gaffney to draw New England within 24-13 shortly before the half. He would lead another touchdown drive late in the third to make it 24-21 at the start of the fourth, and on the next possession, the Patriots tied it on Stephen Gostkowski’s 47-yard field goal.

The Jets would go on a seven-minute touchdown drive to retake the lead, and after the team’s swapped three and outs, it was Cassel’s time again. With a little over a minute left, no timeouts, and facing a 31-24 deficit, the Patriots took over at their 38. Cassel calmly led the Patriots down the field, completing 5 of 5 passes for 67 yards, including a 16-yarder to Randy Moss with a second left to send the game into overtime.

Had the Patriots gotten the ball first in overtime and not the Jets, there’s a good chance the end result would’ve been different, but even though the Jets walked away with the win, Cassel has nothing to hang his head about.

I’m not declaring that Cassel’s on his way to becoming a legend, or anything remotely close to that, but last night could’ve been his turning point, and with it, a positive sign for the Patriots’ hopes to remain in the hunt. It’s all too easy to write off the Patriots, if you haven’t already, but if Cassel can build on this performance and play well through the remainder of the season, the Patriots might yet still be able to make some noise.

NFL Fantasy Start or Sit Week 9

Halloween. Trick or Treat. You’d think there would be a clever opening in there somewhere. Turns out Chris Berman has a copyright on all of them. That’s fine - being clever is overrated anyway. Here’s a look at last week’s picks.

Time to Shine:

QB Jeff Garcia, Tampa Bay: Garcia did everything but get the Bucs into the end zone. Sadly, that’s really the only thing that matters in football. Miss.

RB Cedric Benson, Cincinnati: Benson would have been better off spending Sunday drinking on his boat. Miss.

RB Willis McGahee, Baltimore: Willis had about half the yards I predicted although he did get a score. We’ll call this one a push.

WR Marques Colston, New Orleans: European sounding name or not, Colston does not play well when on Greenwich Mean Time. Miss

WR Kevin Walter, Houston: 70 yards and two scores. I should listen to my gut more often. Hit.

Ride the Pine:

QB Peyton Manning, Indianapolis: His fantasy number don’t reflect how he played (which was poorly) but the rushing touchdown was enough to make this one a miss.

RB Mewelde Moore, Pittsburgh: Moore is making miracles happen in Pittsburg. Shame on me for doubting him. Miss.

RB Michael Turner, Atlanta: 58 yards on 17 carries. Turner reminds everyone why he was only a backup in San Diego. Hit.

WR Braylon Edwards, Cleveland: The Browns played pretty well, but it wasn’t due to Edwards. 64 yards and not much else. Hit.

WR Plaxico Burress, New York Giants: I don’t think 15 receiving yards was what Plax had in mind when he thought about making his triumphant return to Pittsburgh. Hit.

Week 8 Totals: 4-5-1

Overall Totals: 36-31-4

On to this week’s picks:

Time to Shine:

QB Dan Orlovsky, Detroit: In my never-ending quest to find obscure quarterbacks to plug into your starting line-up, I give you the Lions’ signal caller. He’s shown some improvement over the last two weeks, and with Chicago’s secondary still a little banged up, 200 yards and a couple of touchdowns is well within reach.

RB Ernest Graham, Tampa Bay: Graham has selflessly given up carries in order to fill in at fullback for the Bucs, but with Dunn a little iffy for Sunday, expect Graham to get more carries against an improving but overmatched Chiefs’ defense. 70 yards and a touchdown for Graham.

RB Tim Hightower, Arizona: While Edgerrin James sits on the bench filling out his AARP application, Hightower should see more carries this week. Playing the Rams, he should get a few goal line carries as well. Not a ton of yards, but put him down for a touchdown.

WR Rashied Davis, Chicago: Davis has won the job of “go to guy” mostly by default, but when it comes to Bear receivers, you take what you can get. What you should get out of Davis this week is 75 yards and a score.

WR Ted Ginn Jr., Miami: I know, I know, I’m a week too late with this one. Yet it’s hard to say how much confidence can help a receiver. Ginn has confidence in spades this week and going against a potentially Champ Baily-less Bronco secondary, Ginn could have his second big game ~~in a row, this season,~~ of his entire career. 80 and a score to TGJ.

Ride the Pine:

QB Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay: After watching what the Titans did to Peyton Manning last week, it’s a safe bet that Rodgers will have some difficulty moving the ball against this stingy defense. The Titans ball control offense may also keep him off the field more than his owners would like.

RB Marshawn Lynch, Buffalo: While the Jets offense has been up and down all year, their defense has been stout. Expect Lynch to struggle against them this week.

RB Steve Slaton, Houston: Houston will have too much success throwing the ball against Minnesota to bother testing the Williams brothers this week. Slaton’s carries will drop as will his production.

WR Terrell Owens, Dallas: T.O. may have 25 million reasons to live, but I can’t think of any good reasons to start him this week. Back-up QB, three sub-par performances in a row, and a Giants defense that loves making the Cowboys look bad. No go on T.O.

WR Santana Moss, Washington: Pittsburgh’s defense has a way of slowing down quarterbacks (ask Eli Manning). There’s no better way to slow down a young QB than to take away his biggest target. If the Skins are going to move the ball through the air, they’ll have to find someone else to catch the ball.

Midseason NFL Awards: Portis or Brees for MVP?

We’re already coming up on November and the halfway point of the 2008 NFL season, and what a season it’s been so far.

At the start of the season, who’d have expected the Tennessee Titans to be 7-0 right now and four games ahead of the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC South? What about the San Diego Chargers being 3-5, despite Phillip Rivers having a career season?

Then there are the injuries to some of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, as Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Carson Palmer, and Matt Hasselbeck are all sidelined right now, with Brady and now Palmer done for ‘08.

So who are the best of the best so far? Everyone has their opinions, so I know mine are both alike and different than others. With that said, feel free to give your thoughts on who’s most deserving.

MVP

Clinton Portis, RB, Washington Redskins: With his league-leading 944 yards through eight games, Portis has 260 more yards than #2 Adrian Peterson. The Redskins are 6-2 with new coach Jim Zorn, and the playoffs are well in sight.

The question about Portis, though, is this: Is his success attributed to Jason Campbell playing near-flawless football, or is it the other way around? I’ll settle that by saying it doesn’t hurt either’s cause to have the other playing well.

Runner-Up: Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints

Offensive Player of the Year

Brees: Even with Brees putting up huge numbers, the Saints are still 4-4 and in last in the NFC South, but hey, he‘s not responsible for the defense‘s issues or an underachieving ground game.

Brees already has six 300+ yard games and four three-touchdown games, and he’s on pace to throw for 5,126 yards, which would break Dan Marino’s record. If he can break or get close to the mark, and the Saints are able to make the playoffs, then he could get the edge over Portis.

Runner-Up: Portis

Defensive Player of the Year

Albert Haynesworth, DT, Tennessee Titans: The Titans’ defense is full of guys who’ve had big seasons so far, like Cortland Finnegan and Michael Griffin with four interceptions each, but Haynesworth is showing why he’s going to get paid in the off-season, with six sacks. That total ties him with Minnesota’s Kevin Williams for the most sacks by a defensive tackle.

Runner-Up: Joey Porter, LB, Miami Dolphins

Offensive Rookie of the Year

Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans: While picking him with the 24th overall pick in April looked questionable, I thought it was a pick that could pay off immediately for the Titans, and it has.

LenDale White is still getting a lot of carries, and has 10 touchdowns, but Johnson, who has gotten the majority of the touches, has helped set up a lot of those touchdowns with his 626 yards rushing. Johnson, who tops the AFC (5th in the NFL) in rush yardage, also has five touchdowns (four rushing, one receiving).

Runner-Up: Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta Falcons

Defensive Rookie of the Year

Chris Horton, S, Washington Redskins: There aren’t a lot of rookie seventh-round picks that make an instant impact, but Horton has. The 249th overall pick in April has been a starter for the ‘Skins since Week 2, and he’s made 37 tackles and picked off three passes.

Runner-Up: Jerod Mayo, LB, New England Patriots

Coach of the Year

Jeff Fisher, Tennessee Titans: No-brainer here. The Titans are running away in the AFC South, and they are the only undefeated team in the NFL at 7-0, thanks to a suffocating defense and an offense that has chewed up a lot of yards and a lot of minutes on the ground.

Runner-Up: Dick Jauron, Buffao Bills

One drought ends in Philly, could another end in February?

Is the Philadelphia Phillies triumph in the World Series an omen for the Eagles?

Tonight, the Phillies won their first World Series title since 1980, beating the upstart Tampa Bay Rays to win Game 5 and the title after a two-day rain delay. I actually put some money on the Phillies winning in six, so I’m a little disappointed that the Rays couldn’t push the series to six, but I digress.

Could breaking their streak be a sign that the Eagles could be set to win their first Super Bowl title, or make their first appearance in the title game since 2004.

Before the Eagles went to Super Bowl XXXIX (a 24-21 loss to the New England Patriots), their only previous appearance was in the 1980 season, when Ron Jaworski led the Eagles to Super Bowl XV, where the favored Eagles lost to the Oakland Raiders. It’s a pretty safe bet that there won’t be a rematch of that one at Super Bowl XLIII in Miami, given the current state of the Raiders, but the Eagles have a fight on their hands to even make the postseason.

The Eagles are currently 4-3 and at the bottom of the loaded NFC East, a half-game behind the Dallas Cowboys (5-3) and two back of the division-leading New York Giants, and there are other teams in the NFC who could contend for wild-card berths, so they’ve got work to do. But, they have won two games in a row, and a winnable game at lowly Seattle is next.
