ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that the Philadelphia Eagles have traded Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins.
Washington is reportedly giving up a 2010 second-round pick and either a third or fourth-round pick in 2011 for McNabb.
Reports earlier this week indicated that the Oakland Raiders emerged as the front-runners for McNabb. The St. Louis Rams were the other team being rumored as a possible landing spot.
Clearly, Philadelphia has never really embraced McNabb. Most remember the infamous booing incident when he was drafted with second overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. However, head coach Andy Reid has always stuck by McNabb, and the duo has been a winning one.
McNabb took the franchise to five NFC Championship games and an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIX. He also leaves Philadelphia a six time Pro-Bowler and the team”s all-time leader career pass completions, attempts, yards, and touchdowns.
The only thing lacking on McNabb’s resume is a championship. That quest for a Super Bowl will now carry over to Washington, a team that has Jason Campbell and Rex Grossman on its roster at quarterback.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia will likely turnover the reigns to Kevin Kolb, who was Philadelphia’s second-round selection in 2007. Kolb started two games last season in relief for an injured McNabb in weeks two or three and threw for 718, four touchdowns, and three interceptions combined.
Given that Philadelphia and Washington are both rivals in the NFC East, it should be interesting to see McNabb’s return to Philadelphia.
Andy Reid is expected to address the media at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
