Have we seen the last of Warner?
With every NFL team that gets eliminated from the playoffs, more and more aging veterans begin contemplating hanging up their cleats for the final time.
Read on for all the news on who is considering ending their careers, as well as other hot reports surrounding the NFL as we prepare for conference championship week:
Wade Phillips to Return as Dallas Head Coach in 2010
After three years with the Dallas Cowboys, Phillips finally helped the franchise get the “monkey off it’s back” by winning it’s first playoff game in 13 years.
Phillips has three winning seasons, two division titles, and one playoff victory to his name, so regardless of many calling for his head, there’s actually plenty of reasons to keep him on as the team’s head coach.
He also helped the Dallas defense (which was hiding on Sunday), grow to become the 2nd ranked defense in the NFL. Phillips should have his option for 2010 picked up, and should be seen roaming the sidelines for at least one more season in Dallas.
That is, until Jason Garrett is ready to take over.
Gaines Adams Dies of Cardiac Arrest
Adams reportedly dies of Cardiac Arrest, which was apparently brought on by heart failure.
The former Tampa Bay and Chicago defenses end was just 26 years old.
Kurt Warner to Take 2-3 Weeks to Mull Retirement
Warner will reportedly take 2-3 weeks to come to a decision on whether or not he wants to play again, but any close to Warner and the Cardinals organization are already saying that “he’s done”.
The 38 year old veteran has played elite football for three straight seasons with Arizona, and helped the Cardinals get to the Super Bowl last season, while leading them to two consecutive playoff appearances.
Warner received $19 million this season as part of an extremely front-loaded $23 million dollar contract, which would have him getting just $4 million for 2010. If the numbers tell us anything, it’s that Warner would be getting absolutely robbed to continue playing.
We’re still not ready to believe a guy that is playing as well as he is will call it quits. Stay tuned.
Ed Reed Contemplating Retirement
Reed, 31, dealt with several nagging injuries all season, but despite playing through pain, still had a solid season.
He’s still playing at an extremely high level, so it would be sad to see an elite defender go at such an early stage in his career.
Reed is reportedly “50-50″ on retiring.
Michael Vick to Meet With Eagles About Options
With rumors swirling about Vick being traded (to the Rams?), the two sides will officially schedule and hold a meeting to discuss the star quarterback’s future.
One thing is almost for certain, and that is that Vick’s future has next to nothing to do with Philadelphia. Regardless of whether or not the Eagles also decide to move Donovan Mcnabb, Vick is almost certainly done as an Eagle.
Brian Westbrook to Retire?
Contrary to popular belief, Westbrook, 30, may be forced into retirement do to a troublesome knee, and not his recent issues with concussions.
The veteran running back is due nearly $6 million next year, and remains a long-shot to come back with the Eagles. With LeSean McCoy looking prepared to take over as the starter, look for Westbrook’s career to end with a release.
Derrick Mason Contemplating Retirement Again
After retiring last season, Mason has said he is “done” or at least “60-40″ on retiring. The 36-year old veteran receivers has been leaning towards retiring for the past couple of years now, as many have speculated his strong desire to get a new contract.
Mason has stated that has not been the case, and that he simply views life in a different perspective, especially ever since his friend, Steve McNair, was murdered.
Baltimore is said to still be heavily interested in bringing Mason back, although the team has also been rumored to be in the mix for either Anquan Boldin or Brandon Marshall.
