NFL Quick Hits (September 15): Former Pro Bowler Andrews out for season, Indy’s Gonzalez to return in ’09, QB Garcia returns to Philly, and more

Eagles Lose Tackle Shawn Andrews For Season

Stars are dropping like flies in week one, and the joke is getting old in Philadelphia. After already losing Stewart Bradley in the off-season and seeing Donovan McNabb go down on Sunday, the Eagles take a huge blow to their offensive line.

Winston Justice is the likely candidate to step into the line-up, and if his pass protection isn’t leaps and bounds better than last year Philly could be in trouble.

Jon Runyan remains on Andy Reid’s speed dial.

Anthony Gonzalez to Play Again This Year

There still isn’t a clear timetable on the Colts receiver’s return from a knee injury, but it’s not bad enough to cost him the entire season.

It is bad enough, however, that Indy is discussing bringing outside help, as Gonzo could be out longer than three weeks, and could miss closer to six games.

It’s a wait-and-see. For now, the best bets to fill-in are Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, while Dallas Clark is also likely to see some action in the slot.

Eagles Bring in Jeff Garcia, A.J. Feeley Signs With Panthers

Even Donovan McNabb promoted this move, saying it was a “great idea”. Agreed.

Garcia may be ready to see his kids spawn offspring, but he still knows the offense and can run around a bit. He’s a better player than Feeley, who signed with the Panthers, and offers solid insurance if Kevin Kolb (or McNabb) should struggle on Sunday against the Saints.

McNabb’s status is still up in the air, so this situation should be closely monitored throughout the week.

Carolina signing Feeley probably has more to do with Josh McCown (back-up) hitting the IR, rather than Jake Delhomme’s horrible start to the season. He still warrants monitoring if Delhomme continues to regress.

Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell to Compete For Carries

Good luck figuring this one out, fantasy owners.

With Reggie Bush also in the mix, the Saints are saying out loud that both Bell and Thomas will see solid action when Thomas returns to full health.

While the depth is great for the Saints offense, it could kill your fantasy mojo.

LT Rolls Ankle, Darren Sproles Finishes Game Against Raiders

LaDainian Tomlinson started Monday night’s game and was fairly effective (4.2 YPC), but gave way to Sproles after rolling his ankle.

Sproles finished the game and scored the game-winning touchdown, sprouting question marks about a possible committee, as well as doubt on LT’s availability for next week.

With third down duties almost completely belonging to Sproles, this could be a passing of the torch.

Chris Chambers Being Phased Out in San Diego?

Chambers has clearly regressed every since week five of last year, and is no longer even a remotely decent option in San Diego’s offense.

Philip Rivers looks to Vincent Jackson, Antonio Gates, and both of his star running backs before going to Chambers. And after Monday night, it looks like even Chambers’ back-ups are getting more time on the field than he is.

Dropping Chambers would be well-advised if you’re still holding out hope for a return to his Miami form. It’s not happening.

Patriots/Bills and Chargers/Raiders Provide Great End to First Weak

You can really go about it either way. Either the Bills and Raiders completely blew huge upset wins, or both the Patriots and Chargers had great comebacks and did what they were supposed to do; win the game.

Tom Brady was terrific in the second half after a tentative start, while the Chargers relied on Darren Sproles, not LaDainian Tomlinson, to carry them to the victory.
