Major League Baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline ended at 4 p.m. eastern time today. Most baseball experts predicted Roy Halladay would be traded from the Toronto Blue Jays, but it was another former Cy Young winner who was on the move.
The Chicago White Sox traded pitchers Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard to the San Diego Padres for 2007 NL CY Young winner for ace Jake Peavy. Prospects Dexter Carter and Adam Russell were also sent to San Diego.
Peavy, who rejected a deal to the Sox in May, changed his mind today by waiving his no-trade clause. Maybe the fact that the Sox are just 2 games back of the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central played a part in his decision.
The 28-year old pitcher was placed on the disabled list on June 13 with a strained tendon in his right ankle. He posted a 6-6 record with a 3.97 ERA in 13 starts.
The looming question surrounding the deal is why would the Sox acquire a pitcher who is currently on the disabled list? Some reports are saying that Peavy might not pitch until the end of August.
However, this could be viewed as a move for the future. Peavy is under contract until 2012 and has a $22 million club option for 2013. He will join a rotation with Mark Buehrle, John Danks, and Gavin Floyd. Not a bad rotation to have for the next couple of seasons.
Other notable moves made at the deadline included:
- Boston Red Sox traded pitcher Justin Masterson to the Cleveland Indians for catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez.
- Boston Red Sox traded first baseman Adam LaRoche to the Atlanta Braves for first baseman Casey Kotchman.
- Detroit Tigers acquired Jarrod Washburn from the Seattle Mariners for pitchers Luke French and Mauricio Robles.
- Minnesota Twins traded shortstop Orlando Cabrera to the Minnesota Twins for minor league shortstop Tyler Ladendorf.
- Washington Nationals Traded first baseman Nick Johnson to the Florida Marlins for starting pitcher Aaron Thompson.
