All things considered, this has been a season of minimal frustration for Florida State fans up to this point.
After being decimated by suspensions to start the season and committing seven turnovers in an embarrassing home loss to Wake Forest, the #19 Seminoles (7-2) have won six of their last seven game. FSU is still in the hunt in the ACC, and if not for the late fumble against Georgia Tech, would be in full control of their destiny for the Atlantic Division title and possibly pushing towards the top 10 in the polls.
But it seems that just when things are starting to look up, something negative has to happen.
Apparently there are things more important to receivers Taiwan Easterling, Bert Reed, and Corey Surrency than chasing an ACC title. Those three, along with fellow receivers Cameron Wade and Richard Goodman, are suspended for Saturday’s homecoming game against Boston College after reportedly being in a fight in the student union on Wednesday.
I won’t waste much time on talking about the fight itself, because I wasn’t there, and I can’t and don’t want to bother with placing the blame on so and so. But, if this was an avoidable altercation, these guys should’ve known better, plain and simple.
Surrency, Easterling, and Reed’s suspensions are all significant losses, since that takes away three of FSU’s top four receivers.
Fortunately, receiver is a position where depth isn’t a real issue for the ‘Noles. Preston Parker and Greg Carr are both available, and there’s more experience in the wings in junior Rod Owens. Freshman Jarmon Fortson (who was suspended for the Clemson game) and sophomore walk-on Louis Givens should also get some chances against BC. Somewhat of a makeshift receiving corps, sure, but more than talented enough to get the job done.
The bigger upside is that it’s 2008 and not 1998, and instead of having to air it out 35-40 times, it’s a mix of the run and pass from Christian Ponder, along with a steady diet of running backs Antone Smith and Jermaine Thomas.
What’s going to happen with the suspensions past this weekend is anybody’s guess right now. Reed and Surrency have been suspended multiple times now, so their status for the remainder of the season could be in doubt.
Hopefully this is the last negative headline that Nole fans have to read for a while. This season holds a lot more promise for FSU than many might have expected, and hopefully the suspensions don’t do anything to derail that.
