If you’re a ranked team, and you’ve got a potentially dangerous Thursday night game left on your schedule this season, you should probably start doing all you can to petition to have your game moved.
It’s been a season full of upsets so far, but little ol’ Thursday night has kicked off the upset specials in several weeks.
Last night, #9 BYU saw their BCS hopes come crashing down, as they ran into TCU’s defensive wall and limped out of Fort Worth with a 32-7 defeat, their first Mountain West loss since 2005, which also brought an end to a 16-game overall winning streak.
I’m not sure how many people were really watching though, since the game was on Versus, and there was some baseball game on another channel and ESPN’s Thursday nighter was on as well, but it was a complete domination by TCU on both sides of the ball. The 6-1 Horned Frogs‘ chances of making a serious run at a BCS bowl might be slim, even after an upset that‘s probably going to bump them into the top 20, but if they can run the table (including a win at Utah), they could get in there, depending on how things shake out with Boise State.
The Cougars are the third top-10 team and fifth ranked team to go down in eight Thursday nights, with #10 South Florida going down at home to Pittsburgh two weeks ago, and the week before that, #1 USC fell victim to Jacquizz Rodgers and Oregon State. Before that, South Carolina (who’s knocking on the Top 25 door again at 5-2) and West Virginia went down to Vandy and Colorado respectively.
Here’s are the notable Thursday nighters for the rest of the season:
Oct. 23: West Virginia vs. Auburn
Oct. 30: Cincinnati vs. South Florida
Nov. 6: Virginia Tech vs. Maryland
Nov. 6: Utah vs. TCU
Nov. 13: Miami vs. Virginia Tech
Nov. 20: Georgia Tech vs. Miami
Nov. 27: Texas vs. Texas A&M
Looks like there could be a few more upset specials in the bunch, right? If only West Virginia and Auburn were both still in the top 10 instead of out of the polls completely, then that’d be a marquee game.
The teams who have to wake up Friday morning with an upset loss hanging over their heads are certainly none too happy, but for the football fan, it means that you have something worthwhile to flip the channel to during commercials while Grey’s Anatomy is on. I’m an Ugly Betty fan myself, but I digress…
Oh, speaking of TV, CFB Channel Cruisin’ will be returning next week. I’m finally getting a chance to post a little more (as you can tell by the semi-regular posting this week), so The Red Zone Report will be back to normal pretty soon, hopefully.
