I don’t think anyone needs much reminding, but today is the 7th anniversary of a day that many, many people would like to forget about. Not everyone’s a praying person, but at least take a minute to think about those who were lost, and those who lost someone.
At the same time, put those in who are in the path of Hurricane Ike in your thoughts, as the latest in this summer’s string of storms is set to hit Texas before long. And, with the storm fastly approaching, it’s put a few football games in doubt.
Instead of renewing their rivalry this weekend, Texas and Arkansas are going to have to wait two more weeks to do so, as the threat of Hurricane Ike (which may or may not hit my area) has forced postponement of Saturday’s game to the 27th.
As for LSU’s game against North Texas, that one will be played as scheduled, in Baton Rouge at 8 sharp on Saturday night.
However, the Ravens-Texans matchup could be moved to Atlanta, or somewhere else. The decision on that should be announced sometime this afternoon.
Of the games that are going to be played this weekend around the country, I heard there might be a pretty big one going on in L.A.
In case you hadn’t read the numerous reports around the web already, Ohio State’s Chris Wells practiced on Wednesday, and according to Jim Tressel, was at least 75%.
However, the effects of practicing yesterday meant that Wells didn’t practice today, and as a result, Tressel has downgraded his status to doubtful. You could expect at least some soreness to be there, so there may not be much to read into it besides the fact that he needed to sit out today and rest up before testing himself again tomorrow.
We probably won’t get an official word on whether or not he’ll play until Saturday, but frankly, I’d be surprised if it was anything otherwise. They need him out there, and hopefully for their sake, he’ll be healed up enough to be a major factor.
However, at the same time, they might decide to look at the big picture, and while this is certainly a big game, having him healthy for the rest of the way is more important than risking an aggravation or worsening of the injury for the sake of one game. I wonder if Tressel is entertaining the possibility of sticking Terrelle Pryor in the backfield…
Elsewhere in Ohio, it may be time for Ben Mauk to move on, as an Ohio court turned down his latest appeal to be able to play for Cincinnati. If the first several attempts didn’t go his way, it didn’t look too good for this one to. Unfortunately, Cincinnati could really use him right now, with Dustin Grutza out indefinitely after breaking his leg in Saturday’s loss to Oklahoma.
While Cincinnati may not have enough quarterbacks, South Carolina has more than enough, but one of them needs to develop some consistency.
After Tommy Beecher seemingly threw away the starting job with each one of his four interceptions against North Carolina State in the season opener, Chris Smelley opened the competition right back up by struggling in the Gamecocks’ 24-17 loss at Vandy last Thursday.
Steve Spurrier’s got to worry about how his quarterbacks are on the field, is there a reason to be concerned about Vince Young’s state off of the field? His mental state has been questioned since he was heavily booed in Sunday’s victory over Jacksonville, and on Wednesday, his mom said that Vince isn’t doing too well mentally.
As you could expect, many on the ‘net have voiced their opinion about VY’s potential issues, and there hasn’t been a lot nice said, as you could also expect.
I won’t write a novel here, but I will say a little. When it comes to his play on the field, the Titans won’t be a serious contender if he can’t be efficient, and if he continues to throw more interceptions than touchdowns and barely complete half of his passes, then the criticism won’t go away.
However, if there are some serious mental issues – something more than being unable to handle the criticism – that are plaguing him, he needs to work on those before anything else. Sure, he gets to make millions playing a game, but money and status aren’t the defining marks of happiness, and if he is suffering from something, then he needs to get the necessary help.
Then again, maybe he was just hungry the other night and wanted to relax and eat some chicken wings, and maybe he just needs to a) toughen up and realize that, if he wants to be a successful NFL QB, he has to be all there with mechanics and mentally, or b) decide that, if being in the high-pressure position of being an NFL star isn’t something he wants/needs, hanging it up/taking an extended break from football is in his best interests.
If it’s a long-term concern, it certainly puts the Titans in a fix, but if not, his sprained knee is a blessing in disguise. In the meantime, Jeff Fisher has an experienced backup in Kerry Collins to turn to, a Kerry Collins who had his own well-publicized personal demons early in his career.
While VY will be on the sidelines for at least a week and maybe more, there are a few other notable names who’ll be out.
New Orleans will be without receiver Marques Colston for four to six weeks due to a thumb injury. Drew Brees still has Reggie Bush and Jeremy Shockey, who combined for 14 catches for 166 yards and a touchdown on Sunday against Tampa Bay, but he’ll need someone among the group of Devery ‘Bluegrass Miracle’ Henderson, David Patten, and Lance Moore to step up in Colston’s absence.
Former #1 pick Alex Smith already lost his starting job in the preseason, and the hits keep on coming for Smith, as his season – and potentially his time in San Francisco – is over, thanks to the troublesome right shoulder that limited him last year.
He’s on track to get a big salary next season, and with his health issues and the fact that he hasn’t really had that breakout season that we’ve all been waiting for, he could be on the chopping block in the upcoming off-season.
Maybe Jon Gruden could try to sign him, because you know he can never have enough quarterbacks. So, while Chris Simms has already been let go (and is now with the Titans as Kerry Collins’ backup while VY is out), and Jeff Garcia is out for Sunday’s game against Atlanta thanks to a sprained knee, the Bucs are set with Brian Griese.
And lastly, I’ll tell you to stay away from drugs and hope you listen, but more importantly, don’t get caught with the weed in your car while you’re speedy. Here’s looking at you, now former Indianapolis defensive tackle Ed Johnson.
