Buckeyes will be without Beanie vs. Bobcats
There’s a good chance that a one-legged Chris Wells could probably run for more than 100 yards against Ohio on Saturday, but we won’t get a chance to find that out.
Wells won’t take the field on Saturday when #3 Ohio State takes on Ohio, as he hasn’t practiced at all this week after injuring his foot in the third quarter of Ohio State’s 43-0 win over Youngstown State last Saturday.
Frankly, even if Wells had practiced this week or if he could do a two-step on the dance floor, he would’ve been better off sitting this week, not just because it’s a meaningless game, but because said meaningless game comes right before the ‘Game of the Year/Decade/Century/Millenium’ against USC.
The more anxious of those in Buckeye Nation may not exhale until they see Wells take the field against USC on the 13th, but with him sitting out this weekend, he has some extra time to get the foot as close to 100% as possible.
I do think he’ll probably be feeling a little pain when he and the Buckeyes make the trip to L.A., but while Maurice Wells and Brandon Saine can get the job done, Ohio State’s a better team with him on the field.
Missing a game and a half doesn’t exactly benefit Wells’ Heisman hopes, because the cupcakes offer up the opportunity to put up gaudy numbers, but you’ve got to look at the big picture, not just because big games against the USC’s of the world catch the most eyes among voters (well, many of them), and more than that, it’s all about the Ws, and a healthy Wells is a key to the Buckeyes doing plenty of that.
