If you’ve noticed the lack of posting in the last few days, it’s because I thought I’d reserve my judgments (outside of the Mizzou-Illinois bit) on the opening weekend of the college football season for today, when all of the games were done.

For the most part, the teams who were supposed to win did, but as you can expect, some ranked teams fell, and a few non-BCS teams picked up some big wins against bigger opponents. Arkansas State’s win at Texas A&M and Louisiana Tech’s win over Mississippi State are noteworthy, but of the ones that have an impact on my ballot, Utah and East Carolina winning their respective games weren’t a real surprise, because they’re both top-25 teams, and they were playing opponents who were vulnerable to the upset bug.

The same can be said for UCLA’s win over Tennessee. Daniel Lincoln did the reverse Lawrence Tynes, nailing a kick to send the game into OT, and then he proceeded to miss a relative chip shot to hand UCLA the win.

For all the talk about UCLA’s QB issues, Kevin Craft actually came into the game with more starting experience than Jonathan Crompton, and while he did get picked off four times in the first half, he shook it off and was sharp the rest of the way, while Crompton was below 50% in each half, which negated the productivity by the ground game. That and the special teams figuring into the equation a little more than any coach would like (blocked punt returned for a score, three missed field goals).

And then there’s Clemson. I may have set them up for a fall, but it’s not really my fault they went out and got stomped on like they did. Instead of being the team that dominated the game with efficient QB play, two backs churning out yards on the ground, and playing stiff defense like you would have expected the Tigers to do, that was what Alabama did.

Such wins are justly rewarded, and such losses are justly punished, but good or bad, let us remember that this was only the first week of the season. Well, that’s what I have to keep reminding myself after Mississippi State’s turnover fest against Louisiana Tech…

Anyhow, I’ve put in my ballot for the first blogpoll of the regular season. A little more exciting this time around? You decide.
