After more than 1,200 votes, the voting has closed for the ‘Which school has the richest tradition?’ poll, and the winner is…Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers picked up 282 votes, which accounted for 23% of the total votes. A good part of this can be attributed to a Nebraska message board picking up the link and submitting a ton of votes that put Nebraska well ahead in the early going.

Nebraska does have a great tradition, and even though the last few years haven’t gone as their fan base would like, the start of the Bo Pelini era brings a lot of promise for the program.

Here are how the rest of the results shook out:

2. Ohio State - 239 votes (20%)
3. USC - 148 votes (12%)
T4. Notre Dame - 110 votes (9%)
T4. Michigan - 110 votes (9%)
6. Alabama - 81 votes (7%)
7. Penn State - 69 votes (6%)
8. Oklahoma - 49 votes (4%)
9. LSU - 30 votes (2%)
10. Texas - 25 votes (2%)
11. Georgia - 22 votes (2%)
12. Florida State - 17 votes (1%)
13. Florida - 14 votes (1%)
14. Tennessee - 10 votes (1%)
15. Pittsburgh - 7 votes (1%)
16. Miami - 4 votes

So, what does this poll tell us? Well, not much, to be honest. It was just a good way to see what people think/how many people wouldn’t vote for the school that they go to or root for.

Who do I think has the richest tradition? Well, I’m an SEC guy, so I’d naturally be inclined to go with Alabama, right? Actually, given my allegiance to Mississippi State, that’d actually push me against voting for the Tide, but hey, this is a (mostly) bias-free area.

I’d have to say that Notre Dame and Alabama are neck and neck for the top spot. Both teams haven’t been at their best throughout recent years, but they’ve set such a high standard for themselves that anything less than a championship-caliber team is unacceptable.

It is pretty interesting to note that, possibly with the exception of Tennessee, that the schools who been consistently good for a long, long time garnered the most votes.

And with that in mind, the next installment of our ‘bests’ series will be devoted to which school has the most staying power. I don’t think I’ll be doing a poll this time around, but instead I’ll give my thoughts right off the bat and then leave it to the readers to give their take as well.
