The saga continues - Brett Favre unhappy with Packers

Yesterday, it seemed like Brett Favre was going to be the slated winner in a quarterback competition against Aaron Rodgers. But today, we’re back where we were last weekend. Favre and Head Coach Mike McCarthy had a long discussion that went until the wee hours of the morning. ESPN’s Ed Werder reported that both agreed a trade would be best for the team.

However, the Packers have a problem with where he wants to be traded. Everybody and their mother knows Favre wants to go to the Minnesota Vikings, who are a quarterback away from potentially being a contender. Chris Mortensen (ESPN) says that the other team on his short list is the Chicago Bears, who are always in need of a quarterback.

Favre is not expected to attend camp today, but he did meet with McCarthy again this morning to further their discussion. Apparently, five hours is just too little time to clear the air. One item they discussed yesterday was the open competition. Favre apparently did not like the idea of holding one.

“Mike [McCarthy] told me, hey, we’re a better team with you on it but wanted to know if I have a problem with an open competition,” Favre told Mortensen. “I don’t have a problem with competing — you know that, but Aaron should be the starter right now because he’s been out here all this time. This is more than about an open competition and I can do that, absolutely, but this is going to be mass confusion and that’s not good for this team.”

Favre then said he has lost trust with people in the Green Bay franchise.

“They want to know if I’m [committed], but I want to know if they’re 100 percent committed. The problem is that there’s been a lot of damage done and I can’t forget it. Stuff has been said, stories planted, that just aren’t true. Can I get over all that? I doubt it.”

He was also not pleased at how the Packers were reluctant to take him back.

“So they can say they welcome me back but, come on, the way they’ve treated me tells you the truth. They don’t want me back, so let’s move on. I don’t know where it’s headed. We’ll see.”

Something just doesn’t seem right. Don’t all head coaches think about the present? This team has nearly all the pieces to be successful, but they could be a quarterback away from competing for an NFC Championship. Maybe Aaron Rodgers can do it, but he’s unproven at this point. And like I mentioned yesterday, in the NFL, the proven commodity will always play. The only time that doesn’t work is when a high first-round pick is making too much money to be a backup, but in this case, Rodgers is only making a little over $650,000.

Does Mike McCarthy really want to move on, or do GM Ted Thompson and CEO Mark Murphy want to move on and are dictating that through McCarthy? There is no proof, but I’d pick the latter.

The never-ending saga continues.
