Brett Favre-Packers drama all a big tease

Wow, that was disappointing. The Brett Favre-Packers drama ended in a twist, but it was an unthrilling one to say the least. Wasn’t this supposed to be headed of a big, messy divorce with no pre-nup. But, it turned out be a-okay. Well that’s no fun!

Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Sunday that Favre would be reinstated at 10:00 am today. Following the announcement, the Packers cleared a spot for him on their roster. That’s not the shocker though. ESPN’s Wendi Nix, who has done an excellent job covering the drama this past weekend, reported that Packers’ Head Coach Mike McCarthy will have an open competition between Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Wow! I hate to use the old cliche, but Poor Aaron Rodgers. This was supposed to be his chance to shine and be a starter, but now, it looks likes it’s back to the bench for him.

Yes, I know McCarthy said they would “compete,” but get real. Favre is a future Hall of Famer and is still capable of leading a team deep into the playoffs. Heck, they were a play away from going to the Super Bowl last season. Sure, it was Favre’s interception that ended their hopes, but the play was certainly not the end. Last season’s magic might just come back this season, and in the NFL, you always take the proven commodity over the unproven commodity, unless they were a high first-round draft choice slated to make boat-loads of cash.

So, if I have no problem with Favre staying with the Packers next season, why do I call this all a big tease? Well, it’s simple. I read this:

“Although we built this year around the assumption that Brett meant what he said about retiring, Brett is coming back,” said Packers’ CEO Mark Murphy. “We will welcome him back and turn this situation to our advantage.”

WHAT!?! Weren’t you and Ted Thompson the same guys who slammed the door on a Favre comeback? You were the same guys who made McCarthy look foolish. Of course he really wants Favre back. Now, they both are okay with having him back? Well, reluctantly of course.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the Packers contacted the Vikings on Friday notifying them that Favre was available. However, all signs right now point to Favre staying in the green and gold. This makes the past month or so a very big, monsterous tease. Hopefully, new temporary Packer consultant and former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer can help patch this mess over quickly.
