Malcolm gets a mulligan: Kelly gets to run 40 again

Well, is getting a do-over, sort of.

After running times of 4.75 and 4.68 in the 40 and then pinning the blame on it for being unable to run on the surface that he wanted, the OU receiver and potential first-round pick will get a chance to run the 40 again for scouts tomorrow, and his wish will be granted this time around, as he’ll get to do it on Astroturf.

That was the surface that he’d been practicing on before the workout, and the one that he had requested to run on. However, the scouts, who have the last word, wanted him to run on Field Turf, on which came the runs that ruined his day.

Before last week, Kelly had reportedly been running in a high 4.4s/4.5 range on the Astroturf, but he’s going to have to do better than that tomorrow if he really wants to have something to smile about, as .10 or .15 seconds will be added to whatever time he runs, so he’s going to need his running shoes on to get that time he wants.

If he doesn’t run the time that he wants, I don’t think he’ll have the same rant that he did last week, at least not publicly. According to the Tulsa World, Kelly apologized on Thursday for showing his anger publicly.

That apology is a big step in the right direction, because it shows maturity on his part to not only realize, but also to own up to his mistake.

The only thing that remains to be seen now is if he’ll take advantage of the olive branch that’s been extended his way.

If he does, is there a chance he could jump back into Buffalo’s sights at #11? Given that they seem to be very interested in Michigan St.’s Devin Thomas, Kelly may have to run a Thomas-like 40 to make it happen, but anything’s possible.
