Who’s the Boss in Denver?; Other free agent news (3/7)

Boss BaileyThe Denver Broncos have signed free agent linebacker Boss Bailey, younger brother of superstar cornerback Champ Bailey, to a 5-year deal worth 17.5 million dollars.

After a standout collegiate career at Georgia, Boss Bailey was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 2nd round of the 2003 NFL Draft.  Bailey spent 5 seasons playing in Detroit, where he was largely viewed as a disappointment.

Perhaps that disappointment can be contributed to the success of his brother.  If that’s true, one has to wonder why he’d want to play on the same team as his pereniall All-Pro brother Champ Bailey.

Last season Boss Bailey had 47 tackles and 3.5 sacks.  His career totals are equally unimpressive.  Bailey has totaled 258 tackles, 7 sacks and 2 INTs in his 5-year career.

At least his brother Champ is happy with the move.  In an article from the Associated Press, Bailey states:

”I’m excited to have the chance to play with my brother, and I know that Boss’ speed and versatility will have a great impact on our defense,” Champ Bailey said. “I can’t wait to get on the field with him.”

Talk about brotherly love.

In other news, the Atlanta Falcons have released former 1st round pick Joey Harrington, fueling speculation that they will use their 1st round pick this year on Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan.  Harrington completed 215 out of 348 passes for 7 TDs and 8 INTs last year in 12 appearances for the beleaguered Falcons.

Harrington shouldn’t be in need of a job for long.  While he’s been dissapointing over the years, he’s not exactly a David Carr

Having purged their roster as of recently, the Falcons look to be putting their best foot forward in changing the culture of the team.  The Falcons have also recently cut running back Warrick Dunn, tight end Algee Crumpler, offensive tackle Wayne Gandy and defensive tackle Rod Coleman.

The Tennessee Titans are looking to shore up their defense?!  Wait, shouldn’t they be getting Vince Young help on offense?  Anyways, the Titans and free agent defensive end Jevon Kearse have agreed to terms, bringing back the injury-prone star to the team that drafted him.  Kearse was a beast of a pass rusher his 1st three seasons in the league, but he has suffered injury problems since that have made him brutally average.

Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt had this to say of the move via the teams official web site:

“Our expectation for him is to rush the passer in a limited number of snaps. He has always been a dynamic edge rusher and we want to put him in those situations.”

No, Mike.  He used to be a dynamic pass rusher.

Finally, the Philadelphia Eagles have parted ways with linebacker Takeo Spikes.  Spikes, a 2-time Pro Bowler, had 139 tackles in  his only season as an Eagle.  With the move, the Eagles have saved 5 million dollars against the cap, but Spikes isn’t the kind of player who will be looking for a job for long.
