Brett Favre Retires!

In a fairly shocking move, ESPN is reporting that Packers QB and resident NFL poster child Brett Favre is retiring after 17 seasons in the NFL.
Favre pointed to being worn down by the grueling NFL season, as well as his wife’s thinking that anything short of a Super Bowl run would be a disappointment. It is also rumored that Favre is disgruntled with the Packers front office for their non-interest in adding volatile WR Randy Moss to the team for the 2nd staight year. Favre insists the Moss deal is not the driving reason for his departure.
Brett Favre is considered by many one of the greatest QBs of all time. He is the all time NFL leader in passing yards (61,655), TDs (442) and wins as a starter (160). He holds the record for winning the NFL MVP award at 3. He led Green Bay to the Super Bowl twice, winning Super Bowl XXXI 35-21 over New England in 1997. Last season, Favre had a career best 66.5 % completion percentage to go along with his 4,155 yards passing and 28 TDs. He led the Packers to the brink of the Super Bowl, only to suffer a gutwrenching OT loss at home to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
As one can imagine, Green Bay fans are shocked and dismayed. They have just witnessed the rebuilding of their beloved Packers franchise into one of the better units in the league, only to see their beloved gunslinger call it quits. While back-up QB Aaron Rodgers appears to have the inside track, don’t be surprised to see the Packers make some moves this offseason to bolster the competition for the position.
Still, right now is a time for appreciation. The NFL will not be the same without Brett Favre. He was not only a tremendous athlete on the field, but a warm, endearing person off of it. Let’s hope that 10 years from now he feels like he made the right decision.
