Owner Dan Snyder is hiring a defensive line coach here, firing his coordinators there but a successor to ex head coach Joe Gibbs is still in question.
Both offensive and defensive coordinators Gregg Williams and Al Saunders have been fired. Greg Blache has been promoted to defensive coordinator and Jim Zorn was hired to run the offense. The staff seems to be coming together but who will be the next head coach?
The coaches still in the running are Jim Fassel, Steve Spagnuolo, Ron Meeks, and Josh McDaniels.
Front runners appear to be Jim Fassel and Steve Spagnuolo, and we will be waiting to see how the interviews with Spagnuolo will go after the Super Bowl.
Reports have been made that Jim Fassel has had some say concerning the assistant coaches that have been hired and Fassel has agreed with all coaching hires so far.
4 interviews were enough for the Redskins to realize that they did not want Gregg Williams. Granted, Joe Gibbs did retire, but he believed that he was leaving the team with a very solid foundation that will soon be knocked down when a new coach implements his system.
Dan Snyder was reported to have had conversations with the Buffalo Bills (where Gregg Williams coached prior to the Redskins) and they were not pleased the way Williams ran the organization. Snyder was concerned with this and fired Williams.
Since being dismissed from his duties in Washington, Williams has been speaking with Jacksonville about the open defensive coordinator position that was left vacant by Mike Smith, who is now the head coach of the Falcons.
Did the Redskins make a good decision letting Williams go? Yes. I believe they did. Only because it took so long and Snyder seemed to be very cautious about the hire. After years with the team, blessing from the previous coach, and 4 interviews, it would have been very tough to convince the Redskins faithful that this man is truly what you want. If you make a hire without confidence, you have trouble in the future. Dan Snyder and Gregg Williams in front of a podium would just seem silly after all the time and interviews.
The Redskins seem to be doing their homework and not trying to rush any decision. A rushed impulse decision could put the Redskins in this position again in a year or two. Despite a solid foundation in place, Snyder was not confident with what Williams could do to maintain the current system.
Dan Snyder and the Redskins organization seem to realize that five coaches in nine years does not work. They also will have to show patience with the next head coach the way they were with Gibbs. A culture needs to built, a system needs to be put in place, and some continuity will be formed as a result of both.
Be prepared for a few more mediocre seasons in Washington. 7-9, here we come! But with patience, a good team could be built.
